A Three-Year Special Action Set to Boost Patent Commercialization and Utilization in China
Is there any solution when researchers are unwilling, unable or even afraid to commercialize their innovations? Can enterprises find a fitting patent to commercialize?The Special Action Plan for Patent Commercialization and Utilization (2023-2025) was recently approved at an executive meeting of the China's State Council. Its general gist covers that as of 2025, a raft of high-value patents will realize commercialization; universities and research institutes will see their patent commercialization rates hike significantly and the total value of patent technology contracts nationwide will hit 800 billion yuan; a slew of enterprises potent in hardcore technology and loaded with solid patents can grow big and strong, IP edge in some key sectors may materialize at speed and the total value of evaluated and recorded patent-intense products shall exceed a trillion yuan.
TIPO’s Q3 2023 IPR Statistics Report
In Q3 2023, TIPO received a total of 18,310 patent applications (including invention, utility model, and design patents), marking a 1% increase over the same period last year. Of these, the number of invention patent applications (12,670) also grew by 1%. Trademark applications stood at 23,632 cases, with a drop of 7%. For invention patents, TSMC (443 applications) has topped the list for eight straight years among resident applicants, while Samsung Electronics (285 cases) leapt to the top of the list of all non-resident applicants. For trademarks, Taishin (264 applications) and Tencent (38 applications) ranked first among resident and non-resident applicants, respectively.
EPO-CNIPA Joint Communiqué: Chinese Applicants May Continue to Designate EPO as ISA
Nationals and residents of the People's Republic of China will continue to have the option to select the EPO as their International Searching Authority (ISA) for international patent applications filed in English under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) until 30 November 2026. This follows the success of the pilot scheme first started in December 2020, which is being extended for a further three years as mutually agreed between the European Patent Office (EPO) and the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).
