TIPO produces a report on patent application trends in the area of cancer treatment

TIPO has produced a report on patent application trends in the area of cancer treatment, based on patent publications in Taiwan from 2006 to 2015, as well as results of its own questionnaire surveys. It was found in the report that, by category of technical features, among the 6,619 cancer-related patent applications made to TIPO during this period of time, “Drugs and Chemistry” (including cancer drug and formulation development) stood at 6,083, accounting for the 90 percent of all applications—of which Taiwanese nationals ranked the 5th place, by nationality of applicants. It was followed by “Diagnostic and Surgical Devices” (including the development of tumor diagnostic technologies), with 680 applications, accounting for about 10 percent of all applications—of which Taiwanese nationals ranked the 2nd place, by nationality of applicants. These figures have demonstrated the importance of these two technical fields for Taiwan’s cancer treatment as well as the country’s strengths in research and development on this front.
